Jania
As I tried on my dress for Gina and Joaquin’s wedding, I looked in the mirror. “Gene, I am huge… You did this to me… I want to have this baby right now.”
Gene said, “Jania, my girl.”
“Don’t even start that Gówno! I mean it. I have almost expanded out of this dress, and I bought it just for this wedding.” Gene said, “Kochanie, you are still a month from our due date and…
“Do not give me that ‘our’ shit. I am the one who is huge, hot, sweaty, tired and… You look wonderful! You have your spring too much biking shade of skin on. And your muscles are showing everywhere. You look sexy as hell, and I am huge. Just leave me alone.”
Gene said, “No, not ever!”
“… Ok then. Hold me if you can get your arms around me.”
I was quiet a minute, then asked, “I told you I want another girl and a boy, right?”
Gene answered, “Yes Jania, you have told me that a hundred times now.”
“The next one will be easier, right?”
Gene answered, “Yes Jania, of course Jania. I love you, Jania.”
“You damn well better love me.”
Gene said, “Just a gentle reminder, you are the one who wanted to have sex in the back seat of your car to… what was it? ‘Honor those years of unresolved teenage lust.’ Do you remember that?”
“You said we were never going to tell our daughter about that… time. You know she can hear you now! Just shut up and hold me, damn it.”
We were quiet for a minute, then I asked, “What if she is blond?”
Gene answered, “Please don’t worry, she will be our daughter, and she will be beautiful.”
“I want her to speak Polish.” Gene said, “Of course, She will learn Hidatsa and Polish but probably English first.”
“I understand that you must go to the Rez for your Little Shell Celebration and to go to the Yellowstone River, but you had better not be falling for any cute ribbon dancers back there, I mean it.”
Gene said, “Yes Jania, of course Jania. I love you, Jania.”
